Background
In a geopolitical environment in upheaval, “USA Peacemaker”, able to call into question reflexes belonging to the last century, it is important to move forward, to put aside the sanctions policies that have only penalized our economies, our businesses, our homes and to give us back the means to exchange between Russians and Europeans.
The American cost of accelerating a possible way out of the crisis is obvious, and finally goes beyond the preconceptions that serve war more than peace.
American companies, despite the sanctions are already on the starting blocks. A record number of American companies are expected to attend the next SPIEF (San Petersburg International Economic Forum) in June 2025.
As European companies, we can’t sit back and wait for the Commission to review its plans, or dare I say “change its tune”.

Sanctions
There is no shortage of interpretations of the effects of sanctions. Regular attempts are made to highlight their importance in the service of international policies, such as those inflicted to the extreme in Russia. As we’ve often heard, the desired effect will soon be achieved, remembering that the announcement of Russia’s bankruptcy dates back to the spring of 2022. Today, Russia’s economic health – not without its faults, of course – should be the envy of our European economies. This “backfire” has made our homes and businesses the main victims.
In practical terms, sanctions are now preventing a “return” to Russia, but the new geopolitical framework suggests that, from the American perspective, they will soon be put aside.
It should be noted that, paradoxically, it is technically and legally more difficult to lift sanctions in the USA, but a derogatory service exists through the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control), a service through which many European companies would also have to pass as part of the application of the extraterritoriality of American law…
There is every reason to believe that OFAC will always give preference to American companies…
Still, from this angle, the environment can change drastically.
It should be noted, however, that from an administrative point of view, Europe can much more easily and quickly, technically and legally, abandon its sanctions policy.
The Commission needs to rediscover its sense of Realpolitik and listen to its economies.
